South Auckland Boat Repairs
South Auckland Boat Repairs (SABR) was built out of passion and a love for the marine industry. In 1980 Sam Dorotich—at age 16—put down the school books and sought work in the boat business.
He started out as a labourer for fibreglass moulders who were then producing the fleetline trailer boats. When that business ceased trading, Sam altered course and moved on to Marksply Boats. He worked on contract, mainly doing repairs and fibre glassing on the range of launches being built.
In 1986—fuelled by a desire to work for himself and realising boat repairs was a good business—Sam launched South Auckland Boat Repairs. He started working out of his parent’s garage in Manurewa, but once the business got going, and with staff coming on board, he shifted to a rented premise at the corner of Holmes and Mahia Roads in Manurewa. Business was steady particularly with contract work coming from Markline Boats.
In 1988 Sam bought land on Holmes Road allowing for the purpose building of a high studded factory with gantry units for lifting boats. The work was completed In 1991 and from there the business continued to gain speed. In 1995 a second workshop was created and set up for production laminating. As well as boat repairs, Sam’s operation spread to contract boat building and laminating for a number of other boat builders. From there SABR began producing its own range of craft—including the Superior 750 and the Formula 33 hull and deck packages. The business then diversified with the launch of Superior Shuttles—Manufacturers of fibreglass moulded, fully-lockable trailers. With decades of experience, and the ability to weather economic storms, SABR remains committed to producing innovative products underpinned by a service ethic, and love of boats, that remains right on course.
